Behind The Lens

Introducing a new series: “Behind The Lens”, telling the stories behind each image. For this one, King of Kilimanjaro, dive in to life as William followed a lion across Amboseli in a bid to silhouette him against Mt. Kilimanjaro.

  • 10% of the proceeds from William’s print sales are donated to his partnered conservation charity, David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. An organisation focussed on the conservation of wildlife in Africa and Asia through an unyielding, holistic approach.

With William’s style deeply focussed on wildlife in its environment, working with organisations of this calibre and determination is a natural fit and prints are proudly embossed with the foundations logo next to William’s signature.

To date William’s work has been used to raise over £80,000 for a variety of charitable organisations.

  • Often in Amboseli my images the use Mt. Kilimanjaro as a backdrop are elephant centric. The reason for this is simple, elephants are more easily found in Amboseli than lion are and then, even when they are found, the mountain is shrouded in cloud.

On my fifth trip to Amboseli in just two years we found this male chasing a female across the plains. His intention was clear, he wanted to mate, but she did not.

The chase led us a mile from where we first saw them. In pursuit of the king and queen of the savannah hurtling at full pelt, the tallest free standing mountain in the world in the background, it was a phenomenal spectacle.

Eventually he gave up the ghost and settled down atop a small mound, allowing us to position ourselves so we could silhouette him against the mountain, something I have never had the opportunity before or since to do.
