"Closer than I cared to be, forever grateful for the image"

In all of my work, planning is a vital aspect of each image, not much is left to chance. When working in the polar regions this is truer than ever.

Planning each trip to coincide the Arctic spring - light is soft but daylight is constant - the sun never sets at this time of year. When searching for such an illusive animal this is an extremely useful weapon in the photographers arsenal as no matter what time you see a bear there will be enough light to photograph it. Some of my best sightings have taken place between midnight and 5am.

Behind the Lens

The harshest but most rewarding landscape I'm lucky enough to work in. For three consecutive springs I've had binoculars trained on the pale horizon in search of a glimmer of yellow, the gentlest sign of movement, any little sign of bears.
