Borana Lodge

Set high on a hillside with sweeping views of Mount Kenya, Borana Lodge is one of Will’s all time favourites. Get away from the crowds and immersed in the experience, nowhere does safaris like Borana.

Life in Camp

Borana Lodge sits tucked into the hillside of the Borana Conservancy, looking out across wide plains and beyond to the peaks of Mount Kenya. It is one of those places that feels instantly comfortable. The kind of place you settle into slowly and leave reluctantly. The lodge is made up of just a handful of cottages, each with open fireplaces and private verandas perfect for slow mornings or long evenings. Will often spends hours here between game drives, watching elephants pass below or rhinos in the distance. Activities are varied—horse riding, walking, game drives and even mountain biking for those who want something different. Borana’s real strength lies in its purpose. This is a safari that supports something bigger. Every stay directly funds conservation, from rhino protection to local education. It is a lodge with heart, history and a real reason to return.

Timing Your Trip

For crisp mornings and open landscapes, January, February and October are ideal. These months are dry, clear and perfect for game drives or long rides through the conservancy. March, April and November bring a flush of green and dramatic skies, especially beautiful for photographers and birders. Will tends to visit just before or after the rains, when everything feels fresh but still wild. With so much to do beyond just driving, Borana Lodge is a strong option in any season.

Famous For

Borana Lodge is known for its deep roots in conservation and its rare access to experiences that go beyond the safari norm. Guests can ride alongside rhinos, track lions on foot or visit behind the scenes at the conservancy’s operations. The wildlife is strong, the landscape is wild and the feeling of being part of something meaningful is everywhere. Add in a lodge that feels more like a home than a hotel, and you have one of the most quietly powerful stays in Kenya.

Will's Ideal Pairing

"This is one of my favourite destinations in Kenya and one I often recommend to families. It pairs brilliantly with the Mara where you can go on a more typical driven safari after the wealth of Borana activities. Check out the Kicheche camps for some of my favourite spots. Or if you feel like going the extra mile head down to the Chulu Hills to stay away from the crowds."
