Will first visited Alaska in 2025 and Katmai National Park was undoubtedly the highlight. Whether you stay within the park or at a property just outside (from which you can fly in for your bear viewing) there is so much more to this area than the wildlife. The landscapes are remarkable - with more untouched wilderness than anywhere else Will has visited - while those desperate to get close to bears, eagles and whales will not leave disappointed. Timing here is crucial and the summer months are your best bet.

Best Time to Visit

Those looking to see bears need to consider hibernation patterns and the salmon run. Bears tend to emerge from their winter slumber in mid May, making their way down to the river banks to feed on sedge grass. This is a great chance to see the bears before the visitor numbers increase, but those looking to see bears in the rivers fishing should wait till Jly/ August when the salmon run and the bears at their most active.

Known For

Brown Bear Viewing - This is the best place in the world to see coastal brown bears (the largest of their kind).

Epic Landscapes - If the wildlife is not enough to convince you then the vistas should seal the deal. Mountains and volcanos jut out from the ocean, rivers carve their way through the landscape and spruce trees dance their way up the mountains.

Iconic Salmon Run - The main attraction for the bears are the salmon runs and you can often find 30-40 bears in one river fishing.
