Image Story

"How do you photograph an 20ft tall animal that hardly moves when it sees you? Find the second tallest mountain on the continent and go from there!"

I am often asked which the hardest species to photograph is. I suspect people expect me to say lions, cheetah or rhino perhaps. In truth, for me, it’s giraffe.

Beautiful as they are, they are suspicious animals and tend to stand stock still when they see you. As a result injecting energy to an image with stationary subjects is a challenge.

Behind the Lens

Nothing about the giraffe makes sense. How can this exist but a unicorn, a horse with a horn, be a thing of myth. I've almost given up photographing them - the only way to get real motion in an image is if they run, and they only run when scared. So I spend my days looking for a swish of a tail, the movement of a hoof, just something to whisk some motion through an image.
