"This is Amboseli on a postcard, the very image that I conjure up every time I think of it."

This is quintessential Amboseli, but moments like this are far from common. At this time of year, the mountain is only visible around one day in five, and even then there is no guarantee the elephants will line up just as you hope. None of these elements are within my control, which makes it all the more rewarding when it does come together.

We spent five evenings in the same corner of Amboseli, beers in hand, waiting for the elephants to finish feeding in the marsh and make their way back to the thicker bush that lies just beyond the park boundary.

Each night we hoped for a scene like this; elephants spaced just enough, the mountain clear, and a touch of cloud to give a sense of its scale. It is, after all, the highest free standing mountain in the world, and there are few places where its presence feels more powerful than here.
