Image Story

"I wanted a portrait that said wild but calm. Very few male lions in the world would have let me get this shot of them."

One of the ironies of my work is I often finds myself chasing storms rather than searching for wildlife. Favouring wide angle lenses, rarely working with more than a 200mm focal length, I strive to get as much of the subject’s environment in to the shot as possible and the weather plays an important role in this.

When planning locations for shoots weather patterns and seasons are a vital factor. Avoiding cooler, drier seasons when clouds are a rare sight, I go in search of the seasons where rain is likely to be heavy and storm clouds omnipresent.

Behind the Lens

For hours we had to wait for this mating pair to choose a spot to rest and be comfortable with us to approach close enough for the shot I had in mind. I never begrudge these moments though, it's often during this time that new ideas form and new shots are visualised. I find it much easier planning ideas on location than in my studio in the UK.
