"The first successful attempt I have ever had photographing this bizarre animal."

Giraffes have long been my nemesis. They offer so much potential, yet so rarely do they play along. Unlike elephants or lions, they are difficult to read and hard for viewers to connect with. For an image to work—and especially to sell—it needs something out of the ordinary. Either a strong line of symmetry or a sky full of drama.

In Amboseli, I positioned myself on the dry lake bed, where many of my most recognisable images have come from, and tucked myself under the bonnet of our vehicle to wait. As the giraffes approached, their sharp eyesight picked me out, and they froze together, lining up almost by height, as if choreographed.

For anyone wondering about the title, it is named in honour of five siblings who will know exactly what it means.

Behind the Lens

The Amboseli lake bed is the ideal place to photograph giraffe. The low angle you can get, the Mars like environment. All of it combines to create images like no where else on earth.
