Image Story

"The polar bear shot I had hoped for from my very first visit to the Arctic."

This is my favourite image from Svalbard. It took three spring seasons to even have a chance at it, but persistence tends to pay off in places like this.

Polar bear sightings are often more reliable in Churchill, Canada, but the landscape there does not compare. In Svalbard, ridge lines rise sharply from the coastline and black sea meets white ice in every direction. Since my first visit, I had hoped to see a bear move through the narrow gap where these elements come together - the photographic potential is enormous. In May 2024, we finally got the moment.

Behind the Lens

With or without a bear, this landscape is the most exciting I get to work in.
