Anabezi Lodge
Tucked into the eastern end of Lower Zambezi National Park, in a grove of winterthorn trees on the banks of the Zambezi River, Anabezi is one of the finest camps in Zambia. Twelve luxury tents, a floodplain full of elephants, one of Africa's great rivers on the doorstep and unrivalled guiding.

Life in Camp
The name gives the place away. Anabezi is a combination of the Ana trees, or winterthorns, that surround the camp, and the Zambezi River on which it sits. Both are very much present in daily life here. The Ana trees drop yellow pods year-round that draw elephants into and through the camp with total indifference to the guests watching from their decks, and the Zambezi is visible from almost every corner of the property, framed by the escarpment on the far bank and the broad Mushika River floodplain below. Twelve tented suites sit on elevated wooden decks connected by a raised boardwalk, which keeps wildlife moving freely underneath and gives guests the run of camp without an escort. Each tent is genuinely spacious, around a thousand square feet, furnished in a style that manages to be both comfortable and unpretentious, with a king bed, indoor and outdoor bathrooms, lounge area and its own private plunge pool with river views. There are two main areas, each with its own pool and bar, the Zambezi Deck serving as the social heart of camp. The food is excellent and consistently praised by returning guests, with high tea a particular fixture of the afternoon routine. The camp is family-owned and run, and that warmth comes through in the way the whole operation feels. Anabezi welcomes children from age two, with the Mushika Deck available for exclusive family use on request. Will recommends a minimum of three nights. The Lower Zambezi rewards time, and Anabezi's range of activities means you are unlikely to find yourself short of things to do with it.

Timing Your Trip
The Lower Zambezi is fundamentally a dry-season destination, and Anabezi follows suit. The park's camps close during the height of the rains, broadly from December through to March, when the Zambezi swells and the bush becomes impenetrable.
April through June marks the green season shoulder, with lush vegetation and lower visitor numbers. Wildlife can be harder to find as water is plentiful throughout the park, but the landscape is at its most beautiful and the birding exceptional as migrant species arrive. For those happy to trade peak game viewing for quiet and value, this is an interesting time to go.
The dry season proper, July through October, is when Anabezi is at its best. Wildlife concentrates along the river as water sources elsewhere diminish, game drives become increasingly productive, and the Zambezi floodplain in front of camp sees elephant and buffalo in their largest numbers. October is the hottest month and not for the faint-hearted.

Famous For
Anabezi is known for its location. Sitting at the eastern end of the park, well away from the concentration of camps to the west, it offers a level of exclusivity on game drives that few properties in the Lower Zambezi can match. It is also known for its guiding, which is consistently among the best in the park, and for the river. The Zambezi boat safaris here are among the finest in Zambia, and the camp's position at the confluence of the Zambezi and Mushika rivers means the wildlife theatre is essentially constant. Elephants regularly walk through camp and under the boardwalk. Lions have been seen hunting buffalo from the dining deck. It is that kind of place.

Will's Ideal Pairing
"The Lower Zambezi pairs brilliantly with South Luangwa, which is a completely different landscape and a different style of safari entirely. Three nights at Anabezi followed by three or four nights in the Luangwa Valley gives you the best of Zambia in a single trip. Proflight operates direct connections between the two parks, which makes the logistics straightforward. Alternatively, combine Anabezi with a night or two at Victoria Falls and you have a very complete southern African itinerary."
