Chiawa

Chiawa Camp, the first safari camp established along Zambia’s Lower Zambezi River, offers a harmonious blend of luxury and authentic bush experiences. Guests enjoy diverse activities, including game drives, walking safaris, canoeing, and boating, guided by some of Africa’s finest safari experts.

Life in Camp

Family-owned and operated, the award-winning Chiawa Camp is located in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. Set under a grove of evergreen Mahogany trees along the Zambezi River, the camp provides a serene environment where guests can observe abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, and hippos. The camp features luxurious tents with panoramic views of the river, designed to offer comfort while maintaining a connection to the natural surroundings. Activities at Chiawa are diverse, encompassing game drives, guided walking safaris, canoeing, boating, and angling, all conducted by experienced guides. The camp’s commitment to conservation and community engagement ensures a sustainable and enriching safari experience.

Timing Your Trip

The optimal time to visit Chiawa Camp is during the dry season, from May to October. During this period, wildlife congregates along the Zambezi River, enhancing viewing and photo opportunities. The clear skies and moderate temperatures provide comfortable conditions for all safari activities including game drives, walking safaris, and canoeing. That said the temperatures start to climb in September and peak in October above 35 degrees as the rains approach in November. Will suggests going before the end of September to avoid the heat of the season as nights can be a little uncomfortable in the heat and wildlife slows right down to conserve energy.

Will's Ideal Pairing

"I always look to pair Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa - the ultimate Zambian experience. The two parks allow you to get well away from the crowds and enjoy sightings all to yourself. My parents went to Zambia in '24 and then on to Lake Malawi to stay at Kaya Mawa and could have stayed for months."
