Hoanib Valley Camp

Hoanib Valley Camp is where you come to feel the quiet. Days stretch across wild valleys and dry riverbeds, with barely another soul in sight. It’s remote in all the right ways, offering rare wildlife, big skies, and a rhythm that lets everything slow down.

Life in Camp

There’s something about this part of Namibia that leaves a mark. Maybe it’s the silence. Maybe it’s the way the mountains rise straight out of the sand, or the dry riverbeds that suddenly come to life with elephant tracks and giraffe prints, the only other place Will can think to liken it to is Svalbard, where sea meets snow covered slopes in the same way sand meets mountains here. Hoanib Valley Camp is tucked into a curve of the valley, surrounded by shifting desert and the occasional passing oryx. With just six canvas-and-wood tents, it stays small, light, and low-impact. The design is thoughtful; comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, a private shaded deck, but it’s the view that draws your eye every time. Game drives explore the Hoanib River and surrounding plains, often revealing desert-adapted lions, elephant, and giraffe. For something slower, guided walks open your eyes to the smaller patterns of this landscape. You can also visit nearby Himba communities - one of the last truly semi-nomadic cultures in Africa. Will recommends combining it with Shipwreck Lodge for a journey that traces the edge of the wild, from the mountains to the sea.

Timing Your Trip

The desert moves in slow rhythms, and Hoanib changes subtly with the seasons.

From May to October, the dry months bring cooler mornings and clearer skies. Wildlife tends to stay close to the Hoanib River, making it easier to find desert-adapted elephants, lion, and giraffe. These months are ideal for game drives and longer walks.

The wetter season - November to April - brings brief bursts of rain. The valleys green up, the air softens, and the landscape takes on a different kind of beauty. Wildlife spreads out, but the photographic potential and solitude increase.

Will tends to travel here either just before or just after the rains, when the light is golden and the bush feels full of promise. Regardless of when you visit, the feeling of space - and the rare quiet that comes with it - remains unchanged.

Will's Ideal Pairing

"Namibia is a gentle accumulation of epic views. Combine Hoanib with time on the Skeleton Coast out amongst the dunes to really get to grips with this staggering country. Or head further north to Serra Cafema and realise there is still further off the map you can fall."
