Old Mondoro

Old Mondoro Camp offers an unfiltered Zambian safari experience along the Zambezi River. With just five chalets under winterthorn trees, it immerses guests in wildlife encounters, including frequent leopard sightings and close interactions with elephants and hippos.

Life in Camp

Nestled under the canopy of winterthorn trees along the Zambezi River, Old Mondoro epitomizes the essence of a traditional bush camp. Each of the five chalets features a romantically-netted king bed (or two large twins) with wide reed windows offering views of the Zambezi River or a hyacinth-filled channel. An outdoor bath doubles as a plunge pool and an open-air shower allows guests to revel under the stars each night. The camp’s design emphasizes a seamless blend with the natural environment, allowing wildlife to roam freely through the area. Elephants, in particular, are frequent visitors, often wandering through camp and providing guests with unparalleled close-up encounters.

Timing Your Trip

Old Mondoro is at its best during the dry season, from May to November, when wildlife congregates around the river and sightings are most frequent. During this period the sparse vegetation also allows for clearer visibility, enhancing your game-viewing or photography experiences. The camp is closed during the rainy season, from mid-November through April, due to accessibility challenges and dispersed wildlife movements.

Will's Ideal Pairing

"Zambia is still a relative hidden gem on the safari circuit. Lower Zambezi is best paired with South Luangwa, so be it one of the Shenton properties there - Kaingo or Mwamba - or something a little different like a trip to Victoria Falls or a unique adventure on Lake Malawi there’s so much down here for you to discover - long before the crowds do.”
