Uganda

The home of great ape safaris in arguably the most beautiful setting possible. Whether trekking chimpanzees in Kibale Forest or diving in to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of gorilla, there’s not many better places to get eye to eye with our closest relatives.

Experience

Uganda is where the safari feels personal. Will often says it is one of the most emotionally powerful countries in Africa—not just for what you see, but how it makes you feel.

The jewel in the crown is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where gorilla trekking reaches its peak. Hiking through the dense jungle is challenging and humbling, but nothing compares to the moment you come face to face with a mountain gorilla. It is one of those once in a lifetime experiences that actually lives up to the hype.

In Kibale Forest, the chimps take centre stage. Fast moving, noisy and full of character, trekking here is full of drama and excitement. It is also one of the best places in Africa to see these primates in the wild.

Then there is Murchison Falls, where the Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge and bursts out in a dramatic cascade. Boat safaris here are brilliant for elephants, hippos and birdlife, and game drives across the surrounding savannah are a perfect contrast to the forests.

Uganda delivers big on variety, depth and unforgettable moments.

Best Time to Visit

Uganda is lush, green and full of surprises all year round, but Will always plans trips here around the seasons to make the most of the experience. The best times to visit are during the dry seasons from December to February and June to August when conditions are ideal for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. Trails are firmer, the air is clearer and wildlife tends to stay closer to water sources, making sightings easier.

March to May brings heavy rains, especially in the forests, which can make trekking more challenging, though the landscapes turn a rich green and parks are quiet. September to November is another shoulder season with shorter rains that can still be good for travel if you are flexible.

Will always looks at what kind of trip someone wants when suggesting dates. Whether it is trekking in Bwindi, boat safaris in Murchison Falls or birding in Kibale, timing can make all the difference.
