South Luangwa
South Luangwa is Zambia’s wild heart. Low visitor numbers, exceptional guiding, and the best chance in Africa to see leopards make it one of the continent’s last truly wild safari experiences. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s everything a safari should feel like.

Overview
South Luangwa is where safari slows down and the experience deepens. It’s a place where you can walk for hours and not see another vehicle, where leopard sightings are so frequent the park has earned its nickname; the Valley of the Leopard. And when they appear, often draped over a branch or slipping silently through the bush, you’re likely to have them all to yourself. This is the birthplace of the walking safari, and the guiding here remains among the best anywhere. Whether you’re on foot or on a quiet game drive, the feeling is the same - wild, untouched, and unpredictable in the best possible way. The wildlife is extraordinary. Herds of elephant and buffalo, lions on the move, wild dog packs working the riverbanks. Birdlife explodes during the green season, and in the dry months, animals gather around the river in numbers that feel almost cinematic. This is a destination for people who want space, silence, and sightings that don’t come with a queue.

Best Time to Visit
For peak game viewing, the dry season between June and October is hard to beat. Vegetation thins out, the river draws everything in, and leopard sightings are at their most frequent. August through early October tends to be the sweet spot for drama, high concentrations of game, golden light, and cool mornings that give way to warm, wildlife-rich afternoons. Beware though that October gets hot, with temperatures sometimes in the very high 30's.
If you’re after something quieter and greener, the early rains from November bring a burst of energy to the park. Birdlife is phenomenal, the bush turns vivid, and walking safaris take on a different kind of magic. Many camps close between January and March, but for the right traveller, April and May offer a beautiful, peaceful shoulder season with plenty to see and very few others around.
